Helium-3 on the Moon sells for $20 million a kilogram, and Earth has fewer than 20 tonnes of it. A Seattle company has built a machine to mine the lunar surface, NASA is funding it, and China is going too. Every quantum computer on Earth depends on helium-3. It is used in dilution refrigerators, the only machines capable of cooling a quantum processor to within a fraction of a degree of absolute zero, and there is no substitute material. The entire exploitable supply on this planet sits somewhere between 15 and 20 tonnes. The Moon is estimated to hold at least a million tonnes. The reason is the solar wind. For 4.5 billion years the Sun has been firing charged particles outward, and helium-3 rides along with them.
Earth's magnetic field deflects that stream, which is why life survived here and why we have almost no helium-3. The Moon has no magnetic field and no atmosphere, so it has been absorbing the solar wind directly for the entire history of the solar system. Extracting it is brutally difficult. Helium-3 is not a deposit. It is a coating on individual grains of lunar dust at a concentration of a few parts per billion, spread across an area the size of a continent. Interlune, a Seattle company with fewer than 50 employees, has built a full-scale prototype with Vermeer designed to dig three metres down and process 100 tonnes of regolith per hour. Less than 1% of the gas it captures will be helium-3. The contracts are already signed. The US Department of Energy, Maybell Quantum and Finnish cryogenics firm Bluefors have all agreed to purchase lunar helium-3, in one case up to 10,000 litres reportedly worth around $300 million. In April 2026 NASA awarded Interlune a contract to fly prospecting equipment to the lunar surface, the first time the agency has formally backed private resource extraction on the Moon. China has returned lunar samples twice, with Chang'e 5 in 2020 and Chang'e 6 from the far side in 2024, and measured the helium-3 content directly. It has stated its intention to mine it, and is building toward a joint lunar base with Russia by 2030.
